There have been 6,000 hacking incidents reported to the state-run Korea Internet Security Agency this year, according to the report. The hacker, known as ‘TG’ defaced pages with their Twitter account and picture. It is thought in some cases, data may have been stolen and widespread disruption to services caused.

The main kernel.org page is currently carrying a notice that the site has suffered a security breach. "Earlier this month, a number of servers in the kernel.org infrastructure were compromised. We discovered this August 28th. While we currently believe that the source code repositories were unaffected, we are in the process of verifying this and taking steps to enhance security across the kernel.org infrastructure." As the update mentions, there's little to be gained by tampering with the git repositories there anyway. The infection occurred no later than August 12 and wasn't detected for another 17 days. The systems were infected by an off-the-shelf, a self-injecting rootkit known as Phalanx that has attacked sensitive Linux systems before.
What happened?
- Intruders gained root access on the server Hera. We believe they may have gained this access via a compromised user credential; how they managed to exploit that to root access is currently unknown and is being investigated.
- Files belonging to ssh (openssh, openssh-server and openssh-clients) were modified and running live.
- A trojan startup file was added to the system start up scripts
- User interactions were logged, as well as some exploit code. We have retained this for now.
- Trojan initially discovered due to the Xnest /dev/mem error message w/o Xnest installed; have been seen on other systems. It is unclear if systems that exhibit this message are susceptible, compromised or not. If developers see this, and you don't have Xnest installed, please investigate.
- It *appears* that 3.1-rc2 might have blocked the exploit injector, we don't know if this is intentional or a side affect of another bugfix or change.
- We have currently taken boxes off line to do a backup and are in the process of doing complete reinstalls.
- We have notified authorities in the United States and in Europe to assist with the investigation
- We will be doing a full reinstall on all boxes on kernel.org
- We are in the process of doing an analysis on the code within git, and the tarballs to confirm that nothing has been modified.
A hacker stole £35,000 from his neighbours' online bank accounts after working out the answers to their security questions from information they posted on Facebook and Friends Reunited.
Iain Wood spent up to 18 hours per day online, working out passwords from personal information posted on social networking sites by his acquiantances.

He targeted people living in his block of flats in a complex fraud and used his friends' personal details to get past security checks and hack into their bank accounts - stealing more than £35,000 over two years which he blew on gambling.
His scam only came to an end when he became over-confident and changed his system and the authorities were alerted.
Jailing him for 15 months, Judge Guy Whitburn said at Newcastle Crown Court:
"This is the first time I've come across a sophisticated fraud such as this, it was very well planned, complex and clever.
"He was using other people's identities and there was a considerable breach of trust in assuming his neighbours' identities.
"It is an extremely bad deception on people in the same block of flats as he. People's blood runs cold when they see money taken from their accounts."
Wood, 33, was living at Pandon Gate House, on City Road in Newcastle's East End, at the time of the offences, which went on between June 2008 and June last year.
He had got away with his fraud until he dropped his guard and changed his operation by directly transferring money out of one neighbour's account directly into his own, in November 2009.
When the victim was contacted over the withdrawal of £1,500, he realised he had been the victim of a fraud and the police were called.
At that stage the police thought it was a one-off, but when they arrested him Wood blurted out "Have you been on to me for a while?"
A subsequent search of his flat found a variety of bank account pin numbers, someone else's passport, bills and other paperwork, much of which he had taken from the post boxes of other residents in the block.
He admitted hacking into various bank accounts, most of them dormant, and intercepting other people's post when interviewed by police.
Neil Pallister, prosecuting, said: "He said he had figured out how to access online bank accounts.
"He would go on and say he couldn't remember the password and would be asked security questions about date of births and mother's maiden names and he was able to give correct details in some cases.
"He said he would be on the computer 18 hours per day to find out information about people on websites such as Facebook and Friends Reunited.

An Old Forge man accused of hacking into a woman's email account and posting a nude picture of her to her Facebook page was sentenced to a minimum of six months in prison on Wednesday.
David Sica, 25, of 613 Hickory St., Old Forge, turned himself in to the Lackawanna County district attorney's office in December after an investigation found he had hacked a woman's email account and posted the photos of her to her page.
Mr. Sica also hacked into a second victim's email account and downloaded nude pictures of her that she had sent to her boyfriend.
Judge Vito P. Geroulo sentenced Mr. Sica on Wednesday to six to 23 months incarceration in the Lackawanna County Prison for the two counts of stalking charged against him.
Further, Judge Geroulo ordered Mr. Sica to serve one year of probation after his release and also banned him from using a computer for one year starting Wednesday.
"I cannot see any acceptable reason for the conduct you used here," Judge Geroulo said. "It's almost incalculable how far this can go. ... How can their hurt ever be undone?"

The family of a budding computer programmer have on Saturday launched a campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of playing online computer games after their son died following a marathon session on his Xbox.
A post-mortem revealed that 20-year-old Chris Staniforth -- who was offered a place to study Game Design at Leicester University -- was killed by a pulmonary embolism, which can occur if someone sits in the same position for several hours.
Xbox 360 controller Deep vein thrombosis normally affects passengers on long-haul flights, but medical experts fear youngsters who spend hours glued to their consoles might also be at risk and have urged them to take regular breaks.
Professor Brian Colvin -- an expert on blood-related conditions -- said it was "unhealthy" for youngsters to spend long periods in front of their consoles.
"There's anxiety about obesity and children not doing anything other than looking at computer screens," he told The Sun.
David Staniforth has now launched a campaign to warn other parents of the dangers.
"Games are fun and once you've started playing it's hard to stop.
"Kids all over the country are playing these games for long periods - they don't realise it could kill them," he told The Sun.
A coroner's court in Sheffield was told how the youngster -- who had no underlying medical conditions -- was complaining of a low heart rate before collapsing outside a Jobcentre.
Staniforth's distraught father said his son would spend up to 12 hours playing on his Xbox.
"He got sucked in playing Halo online against people from all over the world."
Online computer games are extremely popular as thousands interact in shared science fiction worlds.
Reports of gamers collapsing after spending 15 hours in front of video games are fairly common throughout Asia.

Umeji Narisawa (Japanprobe)

According to the Entertainment Software Association, the average gamer is 37 years old. Kids born the day the original Nintendo was released are entering their late 20s, while geeks who whiled away the days with a Pong machine are storming past 40.
But compared to Umeji Narisawa, we're all just a bunch of babies. Japanprobe caught up with the 99-year-old gamer, who got hooked on the hobby at the tender age of 73 when her grandkids brought home a copy of the action/puzzle classic Bomberman for the NES (technically the Famicon, the Japanese version of the system.) Narisawa was intrigued, gave it a shot, and has been playing it for several hours a day since.
So what does playing Bomberman every day for 26 years get you? Other than the ability to beat it with your eyes closed and the undying respect of anyone who's every picked up a gamepad, it gets you a few nifty health benefits. Narisawa credits her daily Bomberman sessions with helping keep her mind sharp and her fingers strong enough to still thread needles.
While Narisawa needn't fear competition from too many other 99 year-olds, she might want to keep an eye on John Bates. The Wisconsin gamer is the current Guinness World Record holder for the Most Perfect Games of Wii Sports Bowling (2,850), though he's a regular spring chicken at a mere 85.
